Giving Your Babysitter A Few Crucial Safety Lessons
The most important aspect of having a babysitter is to make sure that your children are safe in their care at all times. You can see to this by giving your babysitter a few crucial safety lessons before you leave them alone with your children. Some of the basics your babysitter should be very well versed in are personal safety for the child and fire safety as well as other dangers.
Dealing with Choking
Choking is a very real danger especially with smaller kids and it is important that your babysitter should be aware of what to do in case of any eventuality. Reaction to a choking child or baby is quite different from what you need to do if an adult is choking. The child needs to be turned upside down and the back of his or her head tapped a bit to dislodge whatever it is they are choking on. Babysitters should be aware of this manoeuvre so that they can act quickly in case of a choking hazard.
Fire Safety
You should teach your babysitter about what to do in case of a fire. Familiarize the babysitter with the house and all the exits. Go through escape scenarios and other possibilities. Again, this is a case where it is better to be safe than sorry.
Keep Intruders Out!
While dangers of intruders are quite rare, it is still a possibility and should be addressed. If you have an alarm system, you should teach your babysitter how to use it. Be sure that she knows to lock all doors when everyone is inside and to keep them locked until you get home. Ensure that all windows are locked as well. Go over all safety rules with your babysitter before you leave the house and make sure she understands what to do in case of any emergencies.
